Principal Protected Investments is one type of Structured Products.  It combines some of the features of a fixed-income security, such as return of principal at maturity, with the potential for capital appreciation that you get from equities. They are designed to protect against losses at maturity, while providing the opportunity to participate in the gains on an equity investment.
